The Art of Bonsai
Bonsai is an art. The shaping of the tree, the selecting of a pot
suitable to the beauty of the tree, the arranging of small stones or
figurines at its base: These and much more bespeak of something
creative. Creativity is expressed through artistic media. Be the
medium clay or oil, marble or film or a tree, art is the fashioning from
matter something beautiful. Bonsai rightfully takes a modest place in
this wide and ever growing range of artistic endeavor. Whereas there are
those who may not consider bonsai an art, the telling is in the beauty and
the grace offered by the trees. There are many bonsai enthusiasts who
plant and trim, water and ponder with the eyes of artists. It shows in
the carefully tended growth of their trees. It shows as well in the
deepening spirit of wonder and talent that is the growth of the bonsai
artist. It is as if the tree wants to say, "Give me beauty and I will
give you patience, depth, and insight." But trees of course cannot speak.
But then, perhaps they speak a language that is only seen and not heard.
Theirs is a language for the eyes.
Father Paul Bourne was Bonsai by the Monastery's founder. As a nationally recognized American Bonsai Master, Father Paul's history is interesting and inspirational. Our "How to..." section is an expanding area providing you with information on such topics as how to select the appropriate pot for your bonsai and how to design a plant as told by Father Paul, our founder.
